A traditional Finnish treat, perfect for celebrations.
Preparation Time: 2 hours
Serving Size: 12 servings
Ingredients:
- 500 g all-purpose flour
- 2 dl milk
- 1 dl sugar
- 25 g fresh yeast
- 2 eggs
- 100 g butter, melted
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cardamom
- Oil for deep frying
- Sugar for dusting
Instructions:
1. Warm the milk to lukewarm and dissolve the crumbled yeast in it.
2. Add sugar, eggs, melted butter, and cardamom. Mix well.
3. Gradually add the flour and salt, kneading until the dough is smooth and elastic.
4. Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
5. Roll out the dough to about 1.5 cm thick and cut out circles.
6. Let the circles rise for another 30 minutes under a cloth.
7. Heat oil in a pot to 180°C (356°F). Deep fry the doughnuts until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
8. Place the doughnuts on paper towels to drain excess oil.
9. Cover the doughnuts with parchment paper and a cloth, and keep at room temperature.
10. Before serving, warm the doughnuts in a 100°C (212°F) oven, covered with parchment paper.
11. Dust or coat the warm doughnuts with sugar immediately before serving.
