Delicious fried Cretan pies are the perfect finger food for gatherings or a quick snack. The dough hides a tasty vegetable and cheese filling. Preparation Time: 1 hour
Serving Size: 4-6 servings
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour - 1 cup water
- ½ cup olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 150 g feta cheese, crumbled
- 100 g spinach (fresh or frozen)
- 1 cup grated cheese (e.g., mozzarella or Emmental)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Black pepper to taste
- Oil for deep frying
Instructions:
1. Prepare the dough by mixing the flour, water, olive oil, and salt in a bowl. Knead the dough until smooth and let it rest for about 20 minutes.2. Make the filling by combining crumbled feta cheese, spinach, grated cheese, oregano, and black pepper in a bowl. Mix well.
3. Roll out the dough into a thin sheet and cut out circles (about 4 inches in diameter).
4. Place about a tablespoon of filling in the center of each circle. Fold the circle in half and press the edges tightly to seal.
5. Heat oil in a deep pot. Fry the pies until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes on each side.
6. Remove the pies and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve immediately.
