A hearty Finnish rye bread, perfect for sandwiches or to enjoy with butter and cheese. Preparation Time: 2.5 hours (including rising time)
Serving Size: 10 slices
Ingredients:
- 5 dl rye flour
- 3 dl warm water
- 1 dl syrup
- 1 packet (about 11 g) dry yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 dl wheat flour (optional, for a softer texture)
Instructions:
1. Warm the water until it is lukewarm.
2. In a large bowl, mix the dry yeast with the rye flour and salt.
3. Add the warm water and syrup to the flour mixture. Stir until a smooth dough forms.
4. If desired, add wheat flour gradually until the dough reaches a suitable consistency.
5. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it is elastic.
6. Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.
7. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
8. Allow the loaf to rise for another 30 minutes.
9. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (392°F) for about 30-40 minutes, until golden brown and cooked through.
10. Let the bread cool before slicing.
