A traditional Finnish rye bread that's hearty and delicious. Preparation Time: 2 hours 30 minutes
Serving Size: 10 slices
Ingredients:
- 500 g rye flour
- 300 ml water
- 1 packet of dry yeast (about 11 g)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp honey or syrup (optional)
- 2 tbsp oil (e.g., canola or olive oil)
Instructions:
1. In a large bowl, mix the rye flour, dry yeast, and salt.
2. Add the honey (or syrup) and oil to the dry mixture.
3. Gradually pour in the water and stir until the dough is smooth.
4. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it is elastic.
5. Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
6. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
7. Allow the loaf to rise for another 30 minutes.
8. Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F).
9. Bake the bread in the oven for about 30-40 minutes, until golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
10. Let the bread cool on a rack before slicing.
