A delicious and versatile dish perfect for celebrations or everyday meals. Making pickled herring at home adds flavor and style. Preparation Time: 1 hour + marinating time
Serving Size: 4-6 servings
Ingredients:
- 400 g herring fillets
- 1 dl vinegar (e.g. apple cider vinegar)
- 1 dl water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 onion (thinly sliced)
- 1 bay leaf
- 5-6 black peppercorns
- 2-3 allspice berries
- 1 dl oil (e.g. canola oil)
- Fresh dill for garnish
Instructions:
1. Start by rinsing the herring fillets in cold water and patting them dry with a kitchen towel.
2. Prepare the marinade by mixing vinegar, water, sugar, and salt in a saucepan. Heat the mixture until the sugar and salt dissolve, then let it cool.
3. Place the herring fillets, onion slices, bay leaf, and peppercorns in a glass jar or other airtight container.
4. Pour the cooled marinade over the herring and add the oil. Ensure the herring is fully submerged in the marinade.
5. Seal the container and allow the herring to marinate in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours, preferably 1-2 days.
6. Serve the marinated herring with dill, for example on rye bread or as part of a salad.
