A delicious and traditional Finnish herring dish that offers a delightful taste experience, perfect for Christmas or summer with new potatoes. This recipe is ideal for serving on rye bread or on its own. Preparation Time: 30 minutes + marinating time
Serving Size: 4 servings
Ingredients:
- 2 whole fatty herrings
- 1 dl vinegar
- 1 dl water
- 1 dl sugar
- 1 onion
- 2 carrots
- 5 allspice berries
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 dl fresh dill
- Salt to taste
Instructions:
1. Start by cleaning the herrings and cutting them into fillets.
2. Peel and slice the onion and carrots.
3. Prepare the marinade: boil vinegar, water, and sugar in a saucepan. Add the allspice berries and bay leaves.
4. Layer the herring fillets, onions, and carrots in a glass jar.
5. Pour the hot marinade over the fish and vegetables.
6. Allow to cool at room temperature, then transfer to the refrigerator to marinate for at least 24 hours.
7. Serve the herring on rye bread or enjoy it on its own.
