Ingredients:

- 1 prepared herring fillet
- 1 carrot
- 1 red onion
- White pepper
- Bay leaf
- 0.5 dl vinegar
- 1 dl sugar
- 1.5 dl water
- (Optional: a couple of cloves)

Instructions:

1. If necessary, soak the herring fillets. If they are lightly salted, you can use them directly.
2. Peel and slice the carrot into thin rounds. Peel and slice the red onion.
3. Prepare the marinade: Boil water, vinegar, and sugar in a saucepan. Add white pepper, bay leaf, and cloves if desired.
4. Allow the marinade to cool and then pour it into a bowl.
5. Add the herring fillets, carrots, and red onion to the marinade. Ensure all ingredients are submerged.
6. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours before serving to develop flavors.
7. Serve the herring with potatoes or rye bread.
