A delicious and spicy marinated herring, perfect for festive tables or weekday dinners. Preparation time is approximately 24 hours due to marination. This recipe serves about 6.Ingredients
- 1 piece of horseradish (about 50 g)- 3 large salted herring
- 10-15 whole allspice berries
- 10-15 whole white peppercorns
- 3 red onions
- 3 dl water
- 2½ dl sugar
- 10-15 whole cloves
- 2 carrots
- 2½ dl distilled vinegar
- 3 bay leaves
Instructions
1. Rinse and clean the herring, keeping them whole.2. Soak the herring in plenty of cold water for about 2 hours.
3. Peel and slice the carrots and red onions.
4. Prepare the marinade: In a pot, bring water, sugar, distilled vinegar, allspice berries, white peppercorns, cloves, and bay leaves to a boil. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
5. Add the carrot slices and red onions to the marinade and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
6. Remove the pot from heat and allow the marinade to cool.
7. Layer the herring, horseradish, carrots, and red onions in a jar.
8. Pour the cooled marinade over the herring so that they are completely submerged.
9. Seal the jar tightly and refrigerate for at least 24 hours to marinate.
