This delicious cheesy pasta dish is inspired by the time of Thomas Jefferson. It’s the perfect choice for a family dinner or a gathering with friends. Preparation Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients:
- 500 g elbow or tubular macaroni - Sauce:
- 6 tbsp butter
- 1.2 dl all-purpose flour
- 1.2 l whole milk (or 1 l whole milk and 2 dl heavy cream)
- 2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 500 g cheddar cheese
- 225 g gruyere cheese or 150 g pecorino romano cheese
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Topping:
- 4 slices good-quality white bread
- 2 tbsp softened butter
Instructions:
1. Cook the macaroni according to package instructions in salted water. Drain and set aside for a moment. 2. Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the flour. Do not let the flour brown.
3. Gradually whisk in the milk. Season the sauce with salt, nutmeg, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
4. Grate the cheddar and gruyere cheese, then stir them into the sauce until melted. Finally, add the Worcestershire sauce.
5. Crumble the white bread and mix it with the softened butter.
6. Grease a baking dish, place the cooked macaroni in it, and pour the cheese sauce over the top.
7. Sprinkle the bread mixture on top.
8. Bake at 200°C (400°F) for about 20 minutes. Let sit for about five minutes before serving.
