A traditional Finnish rutabaga casserole that is creamy, flavorful, and perfect for the holiday season. Preparation Time: 1 hour
Serving Size: 6 servings
Ingredients:
- 1 kg rutabaga
- 2 tsp salt
- 2 dl cream
- ½ tsp ginger
- ½ tsp white pepper
- 1 dl breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- ½ tsp ground nutmeg
- 0.5 dl water
- 3 tbsp syrup
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- Butter (for greasing the baking dish)
Instructions:
1. Peel and chop the rutabaga into cubes.
2. Boil the rutabaga in salted water until soft. Reserve the cooking water.
3. Mash the boiled rutabaga into a smooth puree.
4. Add cream, ginger, white pepper, breadcrumbs, egg, nutmeg, syrup, and cinnamon to the rutabaga puree. Mix well.
5. If necessary, add some reserved cooking water until the mixture reaches a suitable consistency.
6. Grease a baking dish with butter and pour the rutabaga mixture into it.
7. Bake at 175°C (350°F) for about 1 hour or until the top is beautifully golden brown.
8. Let it cool slightly before serving.
