A delicious and hearty Finnish dish, perfect for warming up on winter days. This recipe takes some time to prepare, but the end result is well worth the effort. Preparation Time: Over 60 minutes
Servings: 4-6 servings
Ingredients:
- 1 kg cabbage
- 500 g ground beef (beef or a mix of pork and beef)
- 2 dl rice
- 1 onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp paprika powder
- 1 dl crushed tomatoes
- 5 dl beef broth
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp sugar (optional)
Instructions:
1. Cook the rice according to package instructions and set aside.
2. Finely chop the onion and garlic. Sauté them in butter in a large pot until soft.
3. Add the ground beef and cook until browned. Season with salt, black pepper, and paprika powder.
4. Stir in the cooked rice, crushed tomatoes, and beef broth. Mix well.
5. Remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and boil the cabbage in salted water for about 10 minutes until softened. Drain well.
6. Layer the cabbage leaves and the meat mixture in a baking dish until all ingredients are used.
7. If necessary, add more beef broth on top and sprinkle sugar over the cabbage.
8. Bake at 175°C (350°F) for about 1 to 1.5 hours until the casserole is beautifully colored.
