A delicious and hearty Finnish dish combining salted herring, potatoes, and onions. Perfect for serving the whole family. Preparation Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Serving Size: 6 servings
Ingredients:
- 3 eggs - Approximately 800 g firm potatoes
- 2-3 onions
- Approximately 25 fillets of salted herring
- 1 liter milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Whole allspice berries
- Slices of bacon for topping
Instructions:
1. Clean and fillet the salted herring, optionally removing the skin. 2. Soak the fillets in loose water for about an hour.
3. Peel the potatoes and slice them into thin rounds.
4. Peel and slice the onions.
5. Grease a baking dish and layer the bottom with potato slices.
6. Add a layer of onions and then a layer of herring fillets on top.
7. Continue layering until all ingredients are used.
8. Pour milk into the dish until the ingredients are submerged.
9. Beat the eggs and mix with salt, then pour the mixture into the dish.
10. Place bacon slices on top of the casserole.
11. Sprinkle whole allspice berries over the top.
12. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C for about 45-60 minutes, until the casserole is golden and the potatoes are tender.
