A French classic perfect for lunch or as a snack, ideal for using up holiday leftovers! Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Serving Size: 2 servings
Ingredients:
- 4 slices of white bread - 100 g ham
- 100 g cheese (e.g., Emmental or Gruyère)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 dl milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
Instructions:
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (392°F).2. Butter the slices of bread.
3. Place two slices of buttered bread on a baking sheet.
4. Add the ham and cheese on top of the bread slices.
5. Cover with the remaining slices of bread.
6. Prepare the béchamel sauce: melt the butter in a saucepan, add the flour, and stir until golden. Gradually add the milk while stirring continuously until the sauce thickens. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
7. Pour the béchamel sauce over the sandwiches.
8. Bake in the oven for about 10-15 minutes until the top is beautifully golden brown.
9. Let cool slightly before serving.
